Back to The Multivariable Chain Rule

Exercise 13

Avg difficulty 2.5

Let z=u2−v2z = u^2 - v^2 and suppose that u=excos⁡(y)v=exsin⁡(y)\begin{aligned} u & = e^x\cos(y) \\ v & = e^x\sin(y) \end{aligned}

  1. Find the values of uu and vv that correspond to x=0x=0 and y=2π/3y=2\pi/3.

  2. Use the Chain Rule to find the general partial derivatives ∂z∂x and ∂z∂y\begin{gathered} \frac{\partial z}{\partial x} \ \mbox{and} \ \frac{\partial z}{\partial y} \end{gathered} and then determine both ∂z∂x∣(0,2π3)\frac{\partial z}{\partial x}\restrict{(0, \frac{2\pi}{3})}{} and ∂z∂y∣(0,2π3)\frac{\partial z}{\partial y}\restrict{(0, \frac{2\pi}{3})}{}
