Suppose that u⃗\vu and v⃗\vv are vectors in Rn\R^n. We wish to find w⃗1\vw_1 and w⃗2\vw_2 so that w⃗1\vw_1 is parallel to v⃗\vv and w⃗2\vw_2 is orthogonal to v⃗\vv, as shown in this figure.

  1. Explain why u⃗=w⃗1+w⃗2\vu=\vw_1 + \vw_2.

  2. Compute u⃗⋅v⃗\vu\cdot \vv as (w⃗1+w⃗2)⋅v⃗(\vw_1+\vw_2)\cdot \vv. Simplify your answer as much as possible, using the fact that w⃗2\vw_2 is orthogonal to v⃗\vv.

  3. Since w⃗1\vw_1 is parallel to v⃗\vv, there is a scalar kk so that w⃗1=kv⃗\vw_1 = k\vv. Substitute kv⃗k\vv for w⃗1\vw_1 in your answer to the previous part and then solve for kk.

  4. Give a formula for w⃗1\vw_1 purely in terms of u⃗\vu and v⃗\vv.
