Exercise 17

Avg difficulty 2.5

Let v⃗=⟨−2,5⟩\vv = \langle -2, 5 \rangle in R2\R^2, and let y⃗=⟨0,3,−2⟩\vy = \langle 0, 3, -2 \rangle in R3\R^3.

  1. Is ⟨2,−1⟩\langle 2, -1 \rangle perpendicular to v⃗\vv? Why or why not?

  2. Find a unit vector u⃗\vu in R2\R^2 such that u⃗\vu is perpendicular to v⃗\vv. How many such vectors are there? Justify your answers.

  3. Is ⟨2,−1,−2⟩\langle 2, -1, -2 \rangle perpendicular to y⃗\vy? Why or why not?

  4. Find a unit vector w⃗\vw in R3\R^3 such that w⃗\vw is perpendicular to y⃗\vy. How many such vectors are there?Justify your answers.

  5. Let z⃗=⟨2,1,0⟩\vz = \langle 2, 1, 0 \rangle. Find a unit vector r⃗\vr in R3\R^3 such that r⃗\vr is perpendicular to both y⃗\vy and z⃗\vz. How many such vectors are there? Explain your process.
