Exercise 14

Avg difficulty 3.0

Show that each is not an equivalence on the set of 2 ⁣× ⁣22\!\times\!2 matrices.

  • Two matrices A,BA,B are related if a1,1=−b1,1a_{1,1}=-b_{1,1}.

  • Two matrices are related if the sum of their entries are within 55, that is, AA is related to BB if ∣(a1,1+⋯+a2,2)−(b1,1+⋯+b2,2)∣<5\lvert(a_{1,1}+\cdots+a_{2,2})-(b_{1,1}+\cdots+b_{2,2})\rvert<5.
