Exercise 10

Avg difficulty 3.0

Assume that hh is a linear transformation of VV and that ⟨β⃗1,…,β⃗n⟩\langle\vec{\beta}_{1},\ldots,\vec{\beta}_{n}\rangle is a basis of VV. Prove each statement.

  • If h(β⃗i)=0⃗h(\vec{\beta}_{i})=\vec{0} for each basis vector then hh is the zero map.

  • If h(β⃗i)=β⃗ih(\vec{\beta}_{i})=\vec{\beta}_{i} for each basis vector then hh is the identity map.

  • If there is a scalar rr such that h(β⃗i)=r⋅β⃗ih(\vec{\beta}_{i})=r\cdot\vec{\beta}_{i} for each basis vector then h(v⃗)=r⋅v⃗h(\vec{v})=r\cdot\vec{v} for all vectors in VV.
