Exercise 11.1.4

Avg difficulty 3.0

For u,v\mathbf{u},\mathbf{v} vectors in R3\mathbb{R}^{3}, define the product u∗v=u1v1+2u2v2+3u3v3\mathbf{u}\ast\mathbf{v}=u_{1}v_{1}+2u_{2}v_{2}+3u_{3}v_{3}. Show that

∣u∗v∣≤(u∗u)1/2(v∗v)1/2.\left|\mathbf{u}\ast\mathbf{v}\right|\leq(\mathbf{u}\ast\mathbf{u})^{1/2}(\mathbf{v}\ast\mathbf{v})^{1/2}.

Hint: first show that the operation ⟨u,v⟩=u∗v\langle\mathbf{u},\mathbf{v}\rangle=\mathbf{u}\ast\mathbf{v} is an inner product on R3\mathbb{R}^{3}, then use Proposition 11.13.
