Problem 3

Avg difficulty 3.0

Let GG be a group.

  1. Prove that Z(G)\mathrm{Z}(G) is a normal subgroup of GG.

  2. Prove that Z(G)=G\mathrm{Z}(G)=G if and only if GG is abelian.

  3. Find the center of the group D4D_{4}.(Note: you may assume ∣Z(G)∣<12∣G∣|\mathrm{Z}(G)|<\frac{1}{2}|G|. The reason becomes apparent with 1.11’s solution.)
