Exercise 4

Let GG be the group (Z8,⊕8)(\mathbb{Z}_{8},\oplus_{8}). Let H={0,4}≤GH=\{0,4\}\leq G.

  1. Explain why any left coset of HH in GG by an element g∈Gg\in G is the same as the right coset of HH in GG by gg.

  2. Find all distinct left cosets of HH in GG.

3.0

Exercise 5

Let GG be a group, H≤GH\leq G, and g1,g2∈Gg_{1},g_{2}\in G. Prove that if g1H∩g2H≠∅g_{1}H\cap g_{2}H\neq\varnothing then g1H=g2Hg_{1}H=g_{2}H.

Exercise 6

Let GG be the group (Z99,⊕99)(\mathbb{Z}_{99},\oplus_{99}). It is known H={0,33,66}H=\{0,33,66\} is a subgroup of GG. What is the index of HH in GG?

Exercise 8

Let GG be a cyclic group and H≤GH\leq G.

  1. Explain why G/HG/H is a quotient group.

  2. Show that G/HG/H is cyclic.

Problem 1

Let G=D4G=D_{4}, the dihedral group of order 8. By considering the subgroup axioms, determine which of the following sets, if any, are subgroups of GG.

  1. {e}\{e\}

  2. {e,r,s}\{e,r,s\}

  3. {r,r2,r3}\{r,r^{2},r^{3}\}

  4. {r,r3,r4,r6}\{r,r^{3},r^{4},r^{6}\}

Problem 3

Let GG be a group.

  1. Prove that Z(G)\mathrm{Z}(G) is a normal subgroup of GG.

  2. Prove that Z(G)=G\mathrm{Z}(G)=G if and only if GG is abelian.

  3. Find the center of the group D4D_{4}.(Note: you may assume ∣Z(G)∣<12∣G∣|\mathrm{Z}(G)|<\frac{1}{2}|G|. The reason becomes apparent with 1.11’s solution.)

Problem 4

Let GG be a group, and H,K≤GH,K\leq G. Prove or disprove the following statements.

  1. H∩K≤GH\cap K\leq G

  2. H∩K≤HH\cap K\leq H

  3. H∪K≤GH\cup K\leq G

  4. H∪K≤HH\cup K\leq H

Problem 5

Let GG be a group of order 1024 and let HH be a proper subgroup of GG. Determine the maximum order of HH. Give an example of the groups GG and HH such that HH has this maximum order.

Problem 10

Let GG be a finite group with order mm.

  1. State the smallest value of mm such that GG is non-abelian.
