Problem 10

Avg difficulty 3.0

Let FF be a field and f(x)∈F[x]f(x)\in F[x] be a separable polynomial of degree nn. Suppose EE is the splitting field of f(x)f(x) over FF. Let α1,α2,…,αn\alpha_{1},\alpha_{2},\dots,\alpha_{n} be the zeroes of f(x)f(x) in EE. Define

D=∏i<j(αi−αj).D=\prod_{i<j}(\alpha_{i}-\alpha_{j}).

For example, for two distinct zeroes, we have D=α1−α2D=\alpha_{1}-\alpha_{2}. For three distinct zeroes, we have D=(α1−α2)(α1−α3)(α2−α3)D=(\alpha_{1}-\alpha_{2})(\alpha_{1}-\alpha_{3})(\alpha_{2}-\alpha_{3}). The discriminant of f(x)f(x) is defined to be Δ=D2\Delta=D^{2}.

  1. Verify that the discriminant of x4−6x3+11x2−6xx^{4}-6x^{3}+11x^{2}-6x is 144 for the case where F=QF=\mathbb{Q}.

  2. Prove that Δ∈F\Delta\in F.(Hint: consider what an automorphism from Gal(E/F)\mathrm{Gal}(E/F) does to DD.)

  3. If τ∈Gal(E/F)\tau\in\mathrm{Gal}(E/F) is the transposition of two zeroes of f(x)f(x), show that τ(D)=−D\tau(D)=-D.

  4. Show that σ∈Gal(E/F)\sigma\in\mathrm{Gal}(E/F) is an even permutation of the zeroes of f(x)f(x) if and only if σ(D)=D\sigma(D)=D.

  5. Hence prove that Gal(E/F)\mathrm{Gal}(E/F) is isomorphic to a subgroup of An\mathrm{A}_{n} if and only if D∈FD\in F.

  6. It is known that if f(x)=x3+px+qf(x)=x^{3}+px+q for some constants p,q∈Fp,q\in F, then

    Δ=−4p3−27q2.\Delta=-4p^{3}-27q^{2}.

    Hence determine Gal(E/F)\mathrm{Gal}(E/F) for the case where F=RF=\mathbb{R} and f(x)=x3+2x−4f(x)=x^{3}+2x-4.
