Problem 9

Avg difficulty 3.0

Let θ∈R\theta\in\mathbb{R}. De Moivre’s formula states that

(cos⁡θ+isin⁡θ)n=cos⁡(nθ)+isin⁡(nθ)(\cos\theta+i\sin\theta)^{n}=\cos(n\theta)+i\sin(n\theta)

for all non-negative integers nn.

  1. Prove De Moivre’s formula.(Hint: you will need an exercise given elsewhere in the book and an exercise given elsewhere in the book.)

  2. Deduce a primitive nnth root of unity in C\mathbb{C}, proving your answer.
