Exercise 11

Avg difficulty 2.5

Suppose that AA and BB are two n×nn\times n matrices and that ABAB is invertible. We would like to explain why both AA and BB are invertible.

  1. We first explain why BB is invertible.

    1. Since ABAB is invertible, explain why any solution to the homogeneous equation ABx=0AB\xvec = \zerovec is x=0\xvec=\zerovec.

    2. Use this fact to explain why any solution to Bx=0B\xvec = \zerovec must be x=0\xvec=\zerovec.

    3. Explain why BB must be invertible.

  2. Now we explain why AA is invertible.

    1. Since ABAB is invertible, explain why the equation ABx=bAB\xvec=\bvec is consistent for every vector b\bvec.

    2. Using the fact that ABx=A(Bx)=bAB\xvec = A(B\xvec) = \bvec is consistent for every b\bvec, explain why every equation Ax=bA\xvec = \bvec is consistent.

    3. Explain why AA must be invertible.
