Back to Finding eigenvalues and eigenvectors

Exercise 3

Avg difficulty 2.5

Determine whether the following statements are true or false and provide a justification for your response.

  1. The eigenvalues of a matrix AA are the entries on the diagonal of AA.

  2. If λ\lambda is an eigenvalue of multiplicity 11, then EλE_\lambda is one-dimensional.

  3. If a matrix AA is invertible, then λ=0\lambda=0 cannot be an eigenvalue.

  4. If AA is a 13×1313\times 13 matrix, the characteristic polynomial has degree less than 1313.

  5. The eigenspace EλE_\lambda of AA is the same as the null space Nul(A−λI)\nul(A-\lambda I).
