Exercise 7

Avg difficulty 2.5

Consider the matrix A=[0.50.6−0.31.4]A=\left[\begin{array}{rr} 0.5 & 0.6 \\ -0.3 & 1.4 \\ \end{array}\right].

  1. Find the eigenvalues of AA and a basis for their associated eigenspaces.

  2. Suppose that x0=[116]\xvec_0=\twovec{11}{6}. Express x0\xvec_0 as a linear combination of eigenvectors of AA.

  3. Define the vectors x1=Ax0x2=Ax1=A2x0x3=Ax2=A3x0⋮=⋮\begin{aligned} \xvec_1 & {}={} A\xvec_0 \\ \xvec_2 & {}={} A\xvec_1 = A^2\xvec_0 \\ \xvec_3 & {}={} A\xvec_2 = A^3\xvec_0 \\ \vdots & {}={} \vdots \end{aligned}. Write x1\xvec_1, x2\xvec_2, and x3\xvec_3 as a linear combination of eigenvectors of AA.

  4. What happens to xk\xvec_k as kk grows larger and larger?
