10.6 Exercise 4

Avg difficulty 2.5

Verify that the total number of nucleons, and total charge are conserved for each of the following fusion reactions in the proton-proton chain.

(i) 1H+1H→2H+e++ve^{1} \text{H} + ^{1} \text{H} \rightarrow ^{2} \text{H} + e^{+} + v_{\text{e}},

(ii) 1H+2H→3He+γ^{1} \text{H} + ^{2} \text{H} \rightarrow ^{3} \text{H} \text{e} + \gamma, and (iii) 3He+3He→4He+1H+1H^{3} \text{H} \text{e} + ^{3} \text{H} \text{e} \rightarrow ^{4} \text{H} \text{e} + ^{1} \text{H} + ^{1} \text{H}.

(List the value of each of the conserved quantities before and after each of the reactions.)
