Exercise 6.2.1

For each of the following vector functions T:Rn→RnT:\mathbb{R}^{n}\to\mathbb{R}^{n}, show that TT is a linear transformation and find the corresponding matrix AA such that T(x)=AxT(\mathbf{x})=A\mathbf{x}.

  1. TT multiplies the j thj^{\,\mathrm{th}} component of v\mathbf{v} by a non-zero number bb.

  2. TT adds bb times the j thj^{\,\mathrm{th}} component of v\mathbf{v} to the i thi^{\,\mathrm{th}} component.

  3. TT switches the i thi^{\,\mathrm{th}} and j thj^{\,\mathrm{th}} components.

Exercise 6.2.2

Assume that T:Rn→RmT:\mathbb{R}^{n}\rightarrow\mathbb{R}^{m} is a linear transformation, and that u1,…,un\mathbf{u}_{1},\ldots,\mathbf{u}_{n} is a basis of Rn\mathbb{R}^{n}. For all i=1,…,ni=1,\ldots,n, let vi=T(ui)\mathbf{v}_{i}=T(\mathbf{u}_{i}). Let AA be the matrix that has u1,…,un\mathbf{u}_{1},\ldots,\mathbf{u}_{n} as its columns, and let BB be the matrix that has v1,…,vn\mathbf{v}_{1},\ldots,\mathbf{v}_{n} as its columns. Show that AA is invertible and the matrix of TT is BA−1BA^{-1}.
