Problem 3

Problem 4

Let pp and qq be primes such that p<qp<q. Let GG be a group of order pqpq.

  1. Prove that there is only one subgroup HH of GG of order qq. Deduce that H⊲GH\lhd G.

  2. Prove also that if q≢1(modp)q\not\equiv 1\pmod{p} then GG is cyclic.

Problem 5

Let GG be a finite group, and write the order of GG as pkmp^{k}m where k≥0k\geq 0, m≥1m\geq 1, and pp is a prime such that p∤mp\nmid m. Let N⊲GN\lhd G such that pp does not divide the index of NN in GG. Prove that NN contains all Sylow pp-subgroups of GG and vice versa. That is,

  1. prove that any Sylow pp-subgroup of NN is also in GG; and
