Exercise 10

Avg difficulty 2.5

In the next chapter, we will consider certain n×nn\times n matrices AA and define a function q(x)=x⋅(Ax),q(\xvec) = \xvec\cdot(A\xvec), where x\xvec is a vector in Rn\real^n.

  1. Suppose that A=[1221]A=\begin{bmatrix} 1 & 2 \\ 2 & 1 \\ \end{bmatrix} and x=[21]\xvec=\twovec21. Evaluate q(x)=x⋅(Ax)q(\xvec) = \xvec\cdot(A\xvec).

  2. For a general vector x=[xy]\xvec=\twovec xy, evaluate q(x)=x⋅(Ax)q(\xvec) = \xvec\cdot(A\xvec) as an expression involving xx and yy.

  3. Suppose that v\vvec is an eigenvector of a matrix AA with associated eigenvalue λ\lambda and that v\vvec has length 1. What is the value of the function q(v)q(\vvec)?
