Activity 9.3.2

After being bored in your previous calculus class (and definitely not in multivariable calculus) you count the floor tiles to see how large the room is. You now know that the room is 32 feet wide and 42 feet in length. Additionally, your tall friend Chuck can barely jump and touch the ceiling which means the ceiling is 10 feet high. Your calculus professor notices you doing these measurements and…

Activity 9.3.4

In this activity, use Properties of vector operations to simplify each of the following expressions into a single vector of the form ⟨a,b,c⟩\langle a,b,c \rangle. For this activity, let u⃗=⟨1,−2,3⟩\vu=\langle 1,-2,3 \rangle, v⃗=⟨2,−2,5⟩\vv=\langle 2,-2,5\rangle, and w⃗=⟨−3,0,3⟩\vw=\langle -3,0,3\rangle.

  1. u⃗+2v⃗+3w⃗\vu+2\vv+3\vw

  2. 2w⃗−3u⃗2\vw-3\vu

  3. −4(v⃗−w⃗)-4(\vv-\vw)

  4. −2(3u⃗)-2(3\vu)

  5. Give the components of the vector that fills in the blank: (2w⃗−3u⃗)−‾=0⃗(2\vw-3\vu) - \underline{\hspace{2.5cm}} = \vzero

  6. Explain why the following expression does not make sense:

Activity 9.3.6

  1. Let u⃗=⟨2,3⟩\vu = \langle 2,3\rangle and v⃗=⟨−1,2⟩\vv = \langle -1,2\rangle. Find ∥u⃗∥\vecmag{\vu}, ∥v⃗∥\vecmag{\vv}, and ∥u⃗+v⃗∥\vecmag{\vu+\vv}. Is it true that ∥u⃗+v⃗∥=∥u⃗∥+∥v⃗∥\vecmag{\vu+\vv} = \vecmag{\vu}+\vecmag{\vv}?

  2. Under what conditions will ∥w⃗1+w⃗2∥=∥w⃗1∥+∥w⃗2∥\vecmag{\vw_1+\vw_2} = \vecmag{\vw_1}+\vecmag{\vw_2}?

  3. With the vector u⃗=⟨2,3⟩\vu = \langle 2,3\rangle, find the lengths of 2u⃗2\vu, 3u⃗3\vu, and −2u⃗-2\vu, respectively, and use proper notation to label your results.

  4. In general, if tt is any scalar, how will ∥tw⃗∥\vecmag{t \vw} be related to ∥w⃗∥\vecmag{\vw}?

  5. Of the vectors ı^\vi, ȷ^\vj, and ı^+ȷ^\vi+\vj, which are unit vectors?

  6. Find a unit vector v⃗\vv whose direction is the same as u⃗=⟨−2,3⟩\vu = \langle -2, 3\rangle.

  7. Find a unit vector v⃗\vv in the opposite direction…

Exercise 19

Let v⃗=⟨1,−2⟩\vv = \langle 1, -2 \rangle, u⃗=⟨0,4⟩\vu = \langle 0, 4 \rangle, and w⃗=⟨−5,7⟩\vw = \langle -5, 7 \rangle.

  1. Determine the components of the vector u⃗−v⃗\vu - \vv.

  2. Determine the components of the vector 2v⃗−3u⃗2\vv - 3\vu.

  3. Determine the components of the vector v⃗+2u⃗−7w⃗\vv + 2\vu - 7 \vw.

  4. Determine scalars aa and bb such that av⃗+bu⃗=w⃗a \vv + b\vu = \vw. Show all of your work in finding aa and bb.

Exercise 20

Let u⃗=⟨2,1⟩\vu = \langle 2, 1 \rangle and v⃗=⟨1,2⟩\vv = \langle 1, 2 \rangle.

  1. Determine the components and draw geometric representations of the vectors 2u⃗2\vu, 12u⃗\frac{1}{2}\vu, (−1)u⃗(-1)\vu, and (−3)u⃗(-3)\vu on the same set of axes.

  2. Determine the components and draw geometric representations of the vectors u⃗+v⃗\vu + \vv, u⃗+2v⃗\vu + 2\vv, and u⃗+3v⃗\vu + 3\vv on the same set of axes.

  3. Determine the components and draw geometric representations of the vectors u⃗−v⃗\vu - \vv, u⃗−2v⃗\vu - 2\vv, and u⃗−3v⃗\vu - 3\vv on the same set of axes.

  4. Recall that u⃗−v⃗=u⃗+(−1)v⃗\vu - \vv = \vu + (-1)\vv. Sketch the vectors u⃗\vu, v⃗\vv, u⃗+v⃗\vu+\vv, and u⃗−v⃗\vu-\vv on…

Exercise 21

Recall that given any vector v⃗\vv, we can calculate its length, ∥v⃗∥\vecmag{\vv}. Also, we say that two vectors that are (non-zero) scalar multiples of one another are parallel.

  1. Let v⃗=⟨3,4⟩\vv = \langle 3,4 \rangle in R2\R^2. Compute ∥v⃗∥\vecmag{\vv}, and determine the components of the vector u⃗=1∥v⃗∥v⃗\vu = \frac{1}{\vecmag{\vv}} \vv. What is the magnitude of the vector u⃗\vu? How does its direction compare to v⃗\vv?

  2. Let w⃗=3ı^−3ȷ^\vw = 3\vi - 3\vj in R2\R^2. Determine a unit vector u⃗\vu in the same direction as w⃗\vw.

  3. Let v⃗=⟨2,3,5⟩\vv = \langle 2, 3, 5 \rangle in R3\R^3. Compute ∥v⃗∥\vecmag{\vv}, and deter…
